Inspected 5 January 2021 · report published 16 January 2021What inspectors found
Applewood Care Home provides care for up to 39 older people, many living with dementia. This recent inspection, conducted across three days in January 2019, evaluated the home's performance across five key areas. The report highlights the dedication of the staff and the new management's efforts to foster a supportive environment, building on previous strengths while addressing areas for continued development.
Regarding safety, residents feel secure and protected from harm. Staff are well-trained to manage individual risks, such as falls or pressure sores, and ensure medication is administered safely. Recruitment processes are robust, and the home maintains high standards of cleanliness and hygiene to prevent infections. While staff often respond promptly to calls, there were some observations that at times they felt they didn't have enough time for more in-depth conversations, and night staff noted potential delays when two staff members were needed.
In terms of effective care, staff possess the skills and knowledge to meet residents' needs, with regular assessments and updated care plans developed collaboratively. The home is actively working to refresh dementia-specific training for staff, which had been diluted due to staff turnover. Residents are supported with their nutritional needs, and timely referrals are made to specialists when required.
The caring aspect of the service is evident in how staff interact with residents. People are treated with kindness, compassion, and respect, and are actively involved in their care planning and decision-making. Staff promote residents' independence and encourage social connections, helping to combat loneliness. Care for those at the end of life is described as compassionate and dignified, with families feeling supported and informed.
In terms of responsiveness, staff understand residents' individual needs and wishes, delivering person-centred care that is regularly reviewed. The service actively seeks feedback and uses complaints to drive improvements, ensuring that care plans reflect what is important to each resident.
Finally, the home is well-led by a manager who provides clear direction and inspires staff. Staff feel valued and that their opinions are taken seriously. Effective quality assurance systems are in place to monitor and improve the service, and strong partnerships are maintained with local health and social care professionals. The manager is working towards formal registration, demonstrating commitment to the role.
