Inspected 12 April 2022 · report published 1 June 2022What inspectors found
This report details an inspection of Cornerleigh, a residential care home supporting individuals with mental health needs, physical disabilities, learning disabilities, and autism. The inspection focused on evaluating the safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership of the service. While residents and their families generally reported feeling safe and well-cared for, the inspection identified specific areas where improvements are needed to ensure consistent high-quality support. The findings offer insights into how the home manages risks, medication, safeguarding concerns, staffing, and its overall operational effectiveness, providing families with a balanced view of the service's strengths and areas for development.
Regarding safety, while residents feel secure and staff are well-trained in safeguarding, some risks were not fully identified or adequately planned for, requiring further guidance for staff. The home ensures sufficient staffing and appropriate training for staff roles, and medicines are managed safely with appropriate systems in place, though some improvements were noted regarding repeat prescriptions and specific medication risk assessments.
In terms of how effective the care is, staff use person-centred approaches, discuss aspirations with residents, and understand their wishes. People receive kind and compassionate care, with staff using respectful language and being attentive to individual emotional and sensory needs, ensuring a positive care experience.
Concerning the caring aspect, people felt safe and staff demonstrated a good understanding of residents' needs, closely monitoring behaviour to provide timely support. Staff are knowledgeable about reporting concerns, and safeguarding training is provided. However, one incident of verbal abuse was not recognised as a safeguarding concern at the time.
For responsiveness, residents and their families feel listened to and involved in the home. The registered manager regularly seeks feedback informally. While staff meetings and keyworker systems are in place, improvements are needed in recording feedback to better identify trends and prompt action.
In relation to how well-led the service is, there is a registered manager in post who is knowledgeable about residents and keeps staff updated. Although quality assurance systems are in place, they had not identified all areas needing improvement, despite the registered manager taking prompt action when issues were raised. The provider and registered manager demonstrate an open and transparent approach, though some informal feedback gathering needs to be more structured and recorded.
