This report summarises an inspection of Court Lodge, a care home providing nursing and personal care for up to 43 older people. The inspection took place on 24 and 26 October 2017. Overall, the report found that residents felt safe and well-cared for, with staff demonstrating kindness and compassion. The service appeared to have good systems in place to ensure resident well-being and effective operations.
On safety, residents and their families felt safe and secure. Staff are trained in safeguarding and know how to report concerns, with robust recruitment processes in place. While most felt staffing levels were sufficient, some staff mentioned pressure during busy mornings, though management was actively recruiting and using agency staff appropriately. People received their medicines safely, with thorough records and competent staff. Risk assessments were in place for individuals and the environment, and emergency procedures were well-practised.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents received nutritious meals with choices and staff were aware of individual dietary needs. Staff induction was comprehensive, and ongoing training and regular supervision supported their development. The home adhered to the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring people’s rights were protected and that consent was sought before care was provided. Residents had good access to healthcare professionals and treatments.
When it comes to caring, residents were treated with kindness, compassion, and respect, with staff showing patience and personality. Dignity and privacy were consistently upheld. Family members were involved in care planning, ensuring personalised care that met individual preferences and choices. People were encouraged to maintain their independence, and staff understood what was important to them.
Regarding how responsive the service is, care plans were comprehensive and regularly reviewed, with initiatives like 'Resident of the Day' ensuring individual needs were actively addressed. Residents' views were listened to, and a clear complaints procedure was in place. People received personalised care from staff who understood and met their needs, and there was a range of activities available for them to choose from.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, residents and their families spoke highly of the management, describing them as approachable and supportive. Staff also felt supported through regular meetings and feedback. The home had effective systems in place to monitor the quality and safety of the service provided, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.
