What inspectors found

This inspection report for Dryad Spinney by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of the care and support provided to residents with learning disabilities or autistic spectrum disorder. The inspection assessed the service across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, caring approach, responsiveness, and leadership. The report highlights the consistent positive rating from the previous inspection, reflecting a stable and well-managed environment where residents' needs are a primary focus. The overall atmosphere is described as friendly and calm, with staff demonstrating respect and a deep understanding of individual needs.

On safety, staff are well-equipped to identify and report concerns, with robust systems in place to protect residents from harm, including the safe management of medications and thorough recruitment practices. Risks to individual health are proactively identified and managed, and emergency plans are in place. Sufficient staffing levels ensure residents' needs are met, and regular health and safety checks are conducted.

In terms of how effective the care is, residents undergo detailed pre-admission assessments to ensure their cultural, spiritual, dietary, and communication needs are understood. Staff are well-trained and supported, with an induction and development program that ensures they have the skills to provide appropriate care, including understanding and applying the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. Residents are effectively supported with their eating and drinking, and their health needs are regularly monitored with prompt referrals to health professionals when required.

The service is caring, with a strong rapport between staff, the registered manager, and residents. Staff promote independence and encourage residents to make their own decisions, respecting their privacy and dignity at all times. Residents' personal preferences and communication styles are understood, and efforts are made to involve them in discussions about their goals and activities. Relationships outside the home are actively supported.

The service is responsive to residents' needs, with tailored care plans that reflect individual preferences and provide clear guidance for staff. Staff monitor changing needs and are prompt in addressing health concerns, referring residents to specialists as necessary. Residents have access to a variety of activities, both within the home and in the community, with activity plans being flexible and individualised. While the service has not received complaints, a clear complaints procedure is in place and accessible.

Regarding leadership, the registered manager fosters an open and inclusive culture, with staff feeling heard and supported. Regular meetings and audits ensure the continuous improvement of the service's quality and safety. New policies and procedures, including those related to the Accessible Information Standard and support for individuals with autism, have been implemented. Action plans are developed to address any identified areas for improvement, such as enhancing the detail in daily records to better reflect resident choices. Residents' feedback is sought, and plans are in place to incorporate preferences for evening activities.
