This inspection report for Durlands Road, a care home for up to four individuals with learning disabilities and autism, provides an overview of its performance across five key areas. The report highlights the home's consistent commitment to providing a positive living environment for its residents. While the overall rating remains good, the inspection identified specific areas for ongoing development to further enhance the quality of care. The findings offer valuable insights for families seeking a supportive and well-managed care setting for their loved ones.
In terms of safety, residents are well-supported with safe staffing levels and consistent, knowledgeable staff. Medicines are managed and administered securely, with regular checks in place. Risk assessments are thorough, promoting independence while ensuring safety, and comprehensive health and safety checks are conducted regularly, including fire safety procedures. Robust recruitment processes are followed to ensure staff suitability.
Regarding effectiveness, while staff demonstrate good knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and support residents' choices, there are areas for improvement. Capacity assessments were not always up-to-date or consistently aligned with legislation, and there was a lack of clear overview for Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) authorisations. Some staff supervision records were not consistently maintained as per the service's intended frequency.
The care provided is noted as being consistently caring. Residents are supported by kind and attentive staff, with whom they have built strong, positive relationships. Staff treat residents with dignity and respect, respecting their choices about how they spend their time. The consistent staff team is a significant asset, enabling staff to understand residents' needs and routines thoroughly.
In terms of responsiveness, the home offers individualized care that meets residents' specific needs. Care records are person-centred, detailing residents' backgrounds, interests, and preferences. Staff are well-informed about residents' communication methods and health conditions, providing tailored support. Residents are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities and outings, with efforts made to provide structured and new experiences.
Finally, concerning leadership, the service is generally well-led, with systems in place for quality monitoring and regular audits. A dedicated team works effectively, and staff feel supported and enjoy their roles. While the service is working towards national accreditation for supporting individuals with autism, communication with relatives could be improved, as noted by some family members. The service is actively addressing areas identified for development.
