Inspected 17 May 2023 · report published 24 August 2023What inspectors found
This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of the recent inspection of Hailey House. The inspection focused on assessing the safety, effectiveness, caring nature, responsiveness, and leadership of the home's services. It details the findings from the visit on May 11th and 17th, 2023, highlighting areas where the home is meeting expectations and areas requiring improvement. This summary aims to offer families a clear understanding of the inspection outcomes to help in their decision-making process for choosing suitable care for their loved ones.
Regarding safety, the inspection found that residents were not always protected from harm. This included issues with risk assessments not being thoroughly completed or updated, unsafe medication management processes, and inadequate infection control measures. The building itself presented maintenance issues, and the availability and training of staff were not always sufficient to meet residents' needs safely.
In terms of how effective the care is, the report indicates that while staff were recruited safely, training and supervision were not consistently adequate. The premises did not always meet the needs of everyone living there, and there was a lack of proactive learning from incidents to prevent future issues.
On the caring aspect, residents and their relatives reported that they were treated with kindness. However, the care provided was not consistently person-centred, meaning individuals' specific needs, dignity, and respect were not always fully upheld.
The service's responsiveness was found to be requiring improvement. Care plans often lacked sufficient detail for staff to provide truly personalised care, and residents were not always adequately supported to engage in social activities that were meaningful to them.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, the leadership and management arrangements did not provide sufficient assurance that the home was run effectively. There were gaps in governance and quality assurance, and systems were not always in place to ensure residents had maximum choice and control over their lives in the least restrictive way. The report does note that residents received adequate food and drink and that the service collaborated with other organisations for joined-up care.
This is an editorial summary intended to make the inspection findings easier to read — it is not a substitute for the full report, and is not medical or care advice.
