Inspected 27 June 2018 · report published 28 July 2018What inspectors found
Harrier Grange is a care home offering accommodation and nursing or personal care, with a specialization in dementia care. This inspection by the CQC focused on assessing the overall quality of the service provided. The report details findings across five key areas, offering insights into the daily experiences of residents and the operational effectiveness of the home. The inspection was unannounced and aimed to ensure the provider meets regulatory requirements and to evaluate the quality of care.
On safety, residents and their relatives generally reported feeling secure, with staff demonstrating awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and robust recruitment procedures in place. While medicines were managed securely and risk assessments were thorough, there is a recommendation regarding the provision of a more secure environment for completing care notes and private conversations, as current arrangements were sometimes conducted in noisy communal areas.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents were involved in decisions about their support, and care plans were regularly reviewed. Staff received appropriate training, and an induction program was in place. However, the frequency of formal supervision sessions for some staff requires improvement, with a noted gap in these sessions for several employees since early 2018.
Regarding caring practices, staff were observed to be kind, respectful, and attentive to residents' needs, likes, and preferences, with residents feeling comfortable and relaxed in their company. People were supported to make choices about their care, and their dignity was consistently promoted.
On responsiveness, care plans were kept up-to-date to reflect any changes in residents' needs, ensuring continuity of care. The home had a clear complaints policy, and feedback indicated that comments and concerns were taken seriously and addressed. The pre-admission assessment process included detailed information about individual preferences.
Concerning leadership, the registered manager was described as supportive and approachable, fostering a warm and positive environment where residents and staff clearly thrived. The home had effective systems for monitoring the quality of care provided, and policies were up-to-date with current legislation and best practices.
