Inspected 25 August 2022 · report published 7 October 2022What inspectors found
Haylands Residential Home for Gentlemen is a care home offering personal care for up to 24 gentlemen over 65, including those with dementia. This report summarises the findings of a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which focused on the safety and leadership of the service. While the inspection identified several areas of concern, it also highlighted positive aspects of care and resident experience.
Regarding safety, the report noted that medication was not always managed or recorded accurately, with instances of incorrect administration records and missed doses. Care plans were not always kept up-to-date with residents' changing needs, and accidents and incidents were not always formally documented, hindering trend analysis. However, staff were observed to use personal protective equipment appropriately, and safeguarding measures were in place with staff demonstrating a good understanding of abuse. The home also operated within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, and pre-employment checks for staff were robust.
In terms of effective care, residents were supported to have maximum choice and control, with staff acting in their best interests and using the least restrictive approaches. Residents reported positively on the staff and described the home as a happy place.
On caring, feedback from residents and relatives was positive, with individuals feeling welcomed and well-supported. Staff felt supported by the registered manager and able to raise concerns, contributing to good morale.
The responsiveness of the service was also noted positively, with residents involved in decisions such as menu choices and supported to access the community.
Concerning leadership and how well-led the service is, there were challenges identified. Significant gaps were present in staff training records, attributed by the manager to difficulties with their training provider. While medication audits were conducted, the weekly checks were not completed prior to the inspection. However, the registered manager was proactive in conducting additional audits and holding meetings following the inspection findings. The home displayed its most recent CQC rating and understood its duty of candour.
