This report details the findings of an inspection at Homefield House Nursing Home, conducted on July 9th and 22nd, 2019. The inspection assessed how well the service meets the needs of the people it cares for across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership. The report provides an overview of the care provided, feedback from residents and their families, and observations made by the inspection team. It aims to give families a clear understanding of the home's strengths and areas for development.
Regarding safety, residents and their families consistently reported feeling safe, with staff demonstrating a strong understanding of safeguarding procedures and risks. While medication stock checks initially showed some discrepancies, the home implemented daily checks which proved helpful, and this did not impact residents receiving their prescribed medication.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents experienced good outcomes due to skilled staff and effective collaboration with healthcare professionals. The home also focused on ensuring residents had adequate nutrition and hydration, and the environment was well-adapted for individuals with dementia. The service has improved in its documentation of decisions made in people's best interests, aligning with the Mental Capacity Act.
The caring aspect of the service was consistently praised, with staff providing compassionate support in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Residents and their families confirmed they were always treated with dignity and respect, and staff actively encouraged independence while ensuring residents felt well-supported and involved in their care.
In terms of responsiveness, the home ensured residents' needs were met through personalised care plans. While care records were comprehensive, there was an opportunity to enrich them further with more personal histories and interests. The provider is actively working to make these records more concise and person-centred.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, a positive and honest culture was promoted by the management. The registered manager demonstrated a clear understanding of their responsibilities, and systems were in place for monitoring and continuous improvement, with input sought from residents, families, and staff.
