Inspected 8 January 2020 · report published 5 February 2020What inspectors found
Maitland House provides personal care and accommodation for up to 24 older people, including some with mental health needs. This recent inspection report highlights a generally warm and supportive environment where residents and relatives speak positively about the staff and management. While many aspects of the care provided are running smoothly and meeting people's needs effectively, the inspection also identified several important areas requiring attention and improvement to ensure consistent safety and quality.
In terms of safety, the home faced some challenges regarding medication management, as stock audits revealed discrepancies, and certain topical creams lacked proper record-keeping. Additionally, environmental safety required immediate action to secure wardrobes to walls, and monitoring systems need to be more rigorous for residents experiencing significant weight loss.
The daily care routines and support systems proved effective, with residents enjoying freshly prepared, nutritious meals and benefiting from staff who receive regular training and supervision. Healthcare needs are generally well-managed in coordination with visiting professionals, although dental check-up planning and some room signage could be further improved.
Residents consistently described the staff as kind, compassionate, and genuinely caring in their daily interactions. Staff members take the time to build good relationships, respect individual preferences, and treat everyone with dignity.
The service responds well to individual choices, offering personalized care plans and a variety of social activities, though staff should ensure that residents who spend time in bed receive sufficient social stimulation to prevent isolation. Relatives and visitors are welcomed without restriction, and feedback from residents is actively gathered and valued.
Leadership within the home is open and transparent, with a management team that investigates incidents and maintains clear oversight. However, the inspection recommended a thorough review of internal auditing systems for medicines and weight monitoring to catch administrative shortfalls more effectively moving forward.
