What inspectors found

Rose Hill Nursing Home in Dorking provides accommodation, nursing, and personal care for up to 35 older individuals, including those with physical and health support needs and dementia. At the time of the inspection in March 2022, there were 26 residents living in the home. This targeted inspection by the Care Quality Commission specifically examined how the home managed infection prevention, control measures, visiting arrangements, and potential staffing pressures during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Regarding safety and infection control, the home successfully managed COVID-19 risks, ensured staff and visiting professionals met vaccination requirements, and effectively handled testing and admissions. However, inspectors noted a specific hygiene issue involving bathroom bins, as some were missing lids or had broken lids, which the registered manager promised to replace immediately.

For the effective category, residents had their care needs regularly reviewed so that appropriate support could be provided directly within the home if they were diagnosed with COVID-19.

When it comes to being caring, residents were supported to maintain contact with their loved ones and could host visitors according to national guidance, with the management keeping families updated on any changes.

In terms of being responsive, staff were organized into specific cohorts to minimize the risk of infection spreading, and care plans were successfully adjusted to provide increased support within the home when residents needed it.

For the well-led aspect, the registered manager implemented clear outbreak management plans and provided ongoing resources, training, and individual support, while staff reported feeling well-supported and able to approach management freely with any queries.
