Inspected 21 April 2023 · report published 7 June 2023What inspectors found
This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of the inspection findings for Sheringham House, a residential care home. The inspection assessed the service across five key areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led. Overall, the report highlights significant improvements made since the previous inspection, leading to the service no longer being in Special Measures. However, areas for continued focus and development remain to ensure the highest quality of care for residents.
Regarding the safety of the service, improvements have been made, particularly in managing risks and staffing. While environmental risks are well-managed and infection control measures are in place, there were instances where health risks, such as constipation, were not consistently monitored or well-managed. Additionally, a specific finding noted an issue with the cleanliness of a shower and shower mat, which was addressed promptly.
In terms of how effective the care is, the service has made progress in personalising care plans and ensuring residents can access essential healthcare services. However, a key area requiring improvement is the consistent support for residents' nutritional needs, with observations of residents taking food from others and challenges in managing healthy weight for some individuals.
The inspection found the service to be caring, with staff demonstrating kindness and compassion. Residents' privacy and dignity were protected, and staff understood and responded to individual needs. Residents and their families reported positive experiences with the care provided.
The service has also shown itself to be responsive, with communication improving for families since the last inspection. Staff understand the residents well and support their aspirations for a quality life, with care plans reflecting individual goals and needs.
Looking at how well-led the service is, there have been efforts to improve governance and leadership. However, the report indicates that the service is not always well-led, with ongoing issues in ensuring residents have maximum choice and control in their lives, and a need for policies and systems to better support least restrictive practices.
