What inspectors found
This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of The New Deanery Care Home following an inspection on 04 April 2019. It assesses the home across five key areas to determine the quality and safety of care provided to its 68 residents. The inspection found that while many aspects of care are effective and the staff are caring, there are areas where improvements are needed to ensure a consistently high standard of service for all residents.
On safety, the home is not always consistently safe, with instances of risk assessments not being detailed or up-to-date, potentially leading to risks not being fully managed. While staff are generally safeguarding aware, there was an instance where an incident was not identified as a safeguarding alert as required, and some residents felt staff were too rushed to spend time with them outside of direct care.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs and preferences are generally well assessed and met, with staff receiving good training and supervision. The home's environment is well-maintained and decorated, and residents are supported to access healthcare services. However, care plans do not always consider the impact of a person's sexual orientation or gender identity on their care, and there were mixed reviews regarding the appeal and temperature of meals for some residents.
Regarding how caring the service is, residents feel safe and supported by kind and compassionate staff who take a genuine interest in them. Residents and their families appreciate the various spaces within the home for visits and spending time together.
On how responsive the service is, residents are given opportunities to provide feedback, which is acted upon, and staff support them with medical appointments and medication. However, care plans and risk assessments can lack personalization and detail, meaning residents do not always receive tailored care.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, while the provider works with external organisations and pilots new technology, audit and quality assurance systems have not always identified issues effectively. The provider has also not always submitted statutory notifications as required, and there have been inconsistencies in care planning and medication information management.
