Inspected 10 October 2018 · report published 28 November 2018What inspectors found
Totham Lodge Home for the Elderly was inspected by the CQC on October 10, 2018. This report summarises the findings of that inspection. The home cares for up to 28 older people, some of whom may be living with dementia. The inspection found that the service is safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led, with many positive aspects noted.
On safety, people and their relatives reported feeling safe, and risks were assessed and managed well. Staff were appropriately recruited and trained in safeguarding, and there were sufficient staff numbers to meet residents' needs. Medicines were managed safely and effectively, and infection control processes were in place. While recruitment processes were generally good, a minor issue with two staff files not containing full employment histories was promptly addressed by the manager.
In terms of how effective the care is, staff received good training, induction, and supervision. Residents had choices in their meals and drinks and were supported to maintain their health and well-being, with access to healthcare professionals. People were supported to make their own decisions. However, parts of the building, including bedrooms and furniture, were noted as needing refurbishment and repair, although the provider was addressing this with a planned action plan.
The service was caring, with staff knowing residents well and being kind, compassionate, and respectful. Residents' independence was promoted, and their dignity and privacy were maintained.
Regarding responsiveness, care plans were person-centred and regularly reviewed to reflect current needs and preferences. Feedback from residents and their relatives was positive, and they felt confident that concerns would be listened to and acted upon. Opportunities for social participation were available for those who wished to engage.
Finally, the service was well-led by a respected management team who promoted a positive culture. Systems were in place for quality monitoring and assurance, with regular audits and a commitment from senior management to continuously improve the care provided. The management team were receptive to feedback and actively sought the views of residents, relatives, and staff to drive improvements.
