What inspectors found

West Hill Care Home provides nursing and personal care for up to 77 residents, supporting individuals with health and support needs such as dementia, epilepsy, and diabetes. The home occupies a modern, clean, and well-appointed building with accessible outdoor spaces, where residents can personalize their private rooms. While families and residents consistently share positive feedback about feeling safe, welcomed, and cared for, recent inspections identified important areas that require administrative attention and operational adjustments.

When looking at safety, the home ensures that residents are protected from abuse and benefits from safe staff recruitment practices and secure premises. However, improvements are needed in medication management, as some prescription records, protocols for as-needed medicines, and specific timing for time-sensitive treatments lacked required precision. Additionally, staff did not always follow proper infection control procedures regarding face masks, and certain safety assessments related to flammable emollient creams and specific equipment required prompt updates.

Regarding effectiveness, staff receive regular training and appropriate inductions to help them understand residents' needs. At the same time, staff supervision schedules need more consistency to ensure every team member receives regular one-to-one support. Furthermore, while the physical environment is modern and pleasant, the dementia care areas would benefit from better environmental adaptations, such as clearer signage and visual cues to help residents navigate independently.

The caring aspect of the home is a clear strength, with staff treating residents with genuine dignity, respect, and kindness. Residents' privacy is carefully maintained during personal care, and staff demonstrate a strong understanding of individual preferences and personal histories.

In terms of responsiveness, the home offers personalized care plans that are reviewed regularly to reflect changing needs. Residents are supported to maintain their hobbies, eat balanced diets, and access necessary healthcare services, while relatives and visitors are welcomed at any time to preserve meaningful personal relationships.

Finally, concerning leadership, the registered manager maintains a visible presence and oversees daily operations to ensure a focus on quality support. Management has shown a proactive approach by quickly addressing inspection feedback, creating detailed action plans, and introducing updated incident-reporting systems to foster continuous learning and improvement.
