This report details the findings of a recent inspection at Winfrith House, a residential care home specialising in support for adults with learning disabilities and autistic individuals. The inspection aimed to assess the quality of care across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, caring approach, responsiveness, and leadership. Overall, the service demonstrates strengths in some areas but requires improvements in others to ensure consistent high standards for its residents.
Regarding safety, while staff are knowledgeable about keeping residents safe and staffing levels are appropriate, there were instances where risks were not consistently identified and managed. Specific issues like fire doors not closing properly and an incomplete assessment of legionella risks were noted and promptly addressed by management. Improvements are also needed in tracking follow-up actions on shared concerns and ensuring robust recruitment checks.
In terms of how effective the care is, Winfrith House is working towards supporting residents with maximum choice and control. However, the current policies and systems do not always fully support staff in providing care in the least restrictive way and in residents' best interests, as required by the Mental Capacity Act. While staff receive induction and training, some essential modules are yet to be completed. The home environment is being reviewed for personalization and stimulation.
On the caring aspect, feedback suggests staff are generally kind, but the way staff engage with residents using meaningful communication needs enhancement. While residents are supported with daily decisions and family involvement, there's a need for clearer plans on how to help residents achieve their goals and aspirations.
The service is responsive, with care plans effectively addressing residents' needs, including anxiety management and communication preferences. Staff demonstrate good knowledge of residents and their support requirements. Residents are encouraged to engage in community activities and maintain relationships, and the complaints process is being overseen. A point for improvement was the lack of an easy-read version of the complaints procedure.
Finally, the service is well-led, though improvements are needed in governance systems to ensure they are robust. There's a need for more effective systems to monitor maintenance issues and ensure all health and safety risks are thoroughly assessed and managed. Record-keeping practices are also being reviewed for clarity and up-to-dateness.
