This report from the Care Quality Commission provides an overview of the inspection conducted at 10 Spennithorne Road. It assesses the service against five key questions: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led, offering insights into the quality of care and support provided to residents with learning disabilities and physical needs. The findings highlight the service's strengths in maintaining a positive and supportive environment, while also identifying areas for further development to ensure the highest standards of care are consistently met.
On safety, the home has robust systems for risk assessment and management, ensuring residents receive their medications safely. While fire safety is largely addressed, some required works are ongoing, and a new fire risk assessment is pending. Staff recruitment is thorough, with appropriate checks in place. There is a plan to increase night staffing levels following a fire service recommendation.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents are supported by well-trained staff and live in a clean environment. However, parts of the home show signs of wear and require refurbishment, with an action plan in place with the landlord. The service is actively addressing a lack of structured competency assessments for staff by commissioning bespoke training.
Regarding caring practices, staff demonstrate genuine kindness and a deep understanding of residents' needs and preferences. There is a strong emphasis on treating residents with dignity and respect, ensuring privacy is maintained. Residents are encouraged to express their views, and their relatives are actively involved in care planning.
On responsiveness, care plans are personalised and reflect individual needs and preferences, ensuring residents' choices are respected. Communication needs are well met, with staff using various methods to ensure understanding. Residents are supported to engage in meaningful activities and maintain relationships, with flexible rotas and accessible transport.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, the management team fosters an open and positive atmosphere. Staff feel supported and communicate effectively. While there was a delay in notifying CQC about Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards authorisations, this has since been addressed. The service has received no complaints since the last inspection.
