Inspected 7 November 2023 · report published 5 December 2023What inspectors found
This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of Trafford Respite Service, assessing its performance across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, caring approach, responsiveness, and leadership. The inspection focused on how well the service supports individuals with learning disabilities, mental health needs, autistic people, and those with physical disabilities, particularly during their transition into the community. The overall aim of the report is to give families a clear understanding of the quality of care and support provided at the service.
On safety, the home ensures residents are protected from avoidable harm through robust staff recruitment and training processes. While most safety protocols are in place, the report noted that guidance for some 'as required' medicines was missing, and an epilepsy care plan was not fully up-to-date, although these were promptly addressed by the manager.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents' health and wellbeing are generally well-maintained, with support provided for their nutritional needs and access to healthcare services. A minor point for improvement was the inconsistent recording of modified diets and the cutting of food for one resident, which the manager committed to rectifying.
The service is described as caring, with staff demonstrating kindness, compassion, and respect for residents' dignity and independence. They actively involve residents in decisions about their care, and a new 'My Voice Matters' meeting has been introduced to gather feedback on the service.
Regarding responsiveness, Trafford Respite Service effectively plans personalised care that meets residents' individual needs and preferences, even when individuals move in at short notice. Communication needs are well-met, with easy-read documents available, and residents are supported to maintain relationships and participate in meaningful activities.
Finally, the service is well-led, with strong governance and a positive culture. Leadership ensures high-quality, person-centred care, and staff feel supported and listened to. While the property is due for refurbishment, the management team has implemented systems to continually improve care quality.
