What inspectors found

21 Mill Lane is a residential care home providing personal care and support for people with learning disabilities and autistic people. The recently refurbished property blends seamlessly into a local residential area with no outward signs of being a care home, offering a large rear garden and interiors tailored to residents' specific sensory and daily needs. A new manager has been in place for five months, working alongside a consistent, dedicated team of staff to create an open and transparent culture focused entirely on residents' well-being, choice, and independence.

The home maintains robust safety arrangements, keeping residents safe from avoidable harm through thorough risk assessments, safe recruitment practices, and proper medicine management that avoids excessive medication. While the environment is secure, staff actively support residents to maintain maximum freedom and choice.

Care is delivered effectively through personalised support plans, specialized staff training in areas like autism and Makaton, and strong collaboration with external healthcare professionals. Residents are actively involved in daily decisions, including choosing and preparing their own meals, and benefit from specialized facilities such as a sensory room and jacuzzi bathroom.

Staff show genuine kindness, compassion, and a deep understanding of individual communication styles, ensuring residents are treated with dignity and respect while pursuing their personal interests and relationships.

The service responds well to individual needs by tailoring care plans, communication strategies, and social activities to match each person's goals, while quickly managing any signs of distress through positive behaviour support.

Leadership is visible, approachable, and proactive, successfully fostering an open culture and driving continuous improvement through effective quality checks and taking feedback seriously.
