Inspected 3 July 2017 · report published 23 September 2017What inspectors found
Belamacanda is a care home providing accommodation and personal care for up to 22 adults with physical or mental health needs. During an unannounced inspection, residents and staff shared positive feedback about the daily life and atmosphere in the home, highlighting a welcoming environment where individuals receive consistent, personalized support from an approachable and dedicated team.
Residents consistently felt protected from harm and abuse, noting that staff managed daily risks well while allowing them to maintain personal independence, such as using social media. Staff underwent thorough background checks before starting work, and there were always enough team members available so that requests for assistance were answered promptly without rushing. Medicines were also managed reliably, and residents were given appropriate time and choice when taking their prescribed treatments.
The home ensured that staff received regular training, professional supervision, and support to carry out their roles effectively. Team members understood how to legally obtain consent and respected residents' capacity to make their own choices, using simple communication signs where helpful. Nutritional needs were properly assessed, and residents enjoyed a healthy diet with the flexibility to eat wherever and whenever they preferred, supported by outside healthcare professionals when necessary.
The atmosphere was described as relaxed and calm, with staff building warm, compassionate relationships with everyone living there. Residents were treated with dignity, and their privacy was respected by staff who closed doors and kept personal information confidential. People felt encouraged to express their preferences, personalize their rooms, and actively participate in regular reviews of their care alongside their families.
Care plans were generally detailed and helped staff understand individual backgrounds and daily preferences. However, some care plans needed more detailed information regarding specific dietary needs and preferences to ensure consistent support. While many residents enjoyed regular activities like salon sessions, music, and outings, records did not always clearly show how a few residents who rarely joined group activities were being supported with their social and emotional needs. Complaints were handled appropriately, and residents knew who to talk to if they had worries.
The management team fostered an open and supportive culture based on the core value that every person matters. Regular meetings, surveys, and feedback resulted in tangible improvements, such as replacing an uncomfortable bath. There were robust internal audits and monitoring systems in place to oversee safety, staffing levels, and care records, ensuring the home operated smoothly and transparently.
