Inspected 6 June 2023 · report published 17 August 2023What inspectors found
Ashview is a residential care home that provides personal care and support for up to 13 adults with learning disabilities and autistic people. At the time of this inspection, 12 people were living at the home. This official report examines how the service ensures the well-being, safety, and proper support of its residents, following up on previous concerns and assessing overall management standards. While the home benefits from consistent staffing and families generally know who the staff are, the inspection identified widespread, significant shortfalls across all areas of operation, pointing to a serious need for improvement.
When looking at safety, the home struggled to properly assess, monitor, and manage risks to residents. Health and environmental risks were poorly documented, medication records were inaccurate or lacked vital details, and incident management and safeguarding processes were not robust enough to protect people from potential harm.
The effectiveness of the care provided fell short of expected standards. Staff lacked adequate training and competency checks around supporting people with learning disabilities and autism, and care plans were not sufficiently personalised to promote independence or meaningful everyday choices.
On a more positive note, visitors are able to come to the home without restrictions, and staff do use personal protective equipment effectively. However, the caring aspect of the service needs improvement because staff did not consistently treat residents with the required level of dignity, respect, or compassion tailored to their individual sensitivities.
Regarding responsiveness, care was not properly tailored to individual needs, and residents were rarely involved in planning their care, choosing their meals, or making decisions about their daily lives. The home environment was also found to be cluttered and lacked stimulation.
Finally, leadership at the service was severely lacking. Management oversight was ineffective, quality assurance systems failed to catch these ongoing issues, and regulations regarding safe care, staffing, and person-centred treatment continued to be breached.
