Inspected 24 August 2022 · report published 8 October 2022What inspectors found
This CQC report provides an overview of Bradbury Grange, a residential care home, following an inspection on August 24, 2022. The inspection assessed the service against key questions including safety, effectiveness, and leadership. While some aspects of care were found to be positive, the overall finding indicates that improvements are needed in several areas to ensure residents consistently receive high-quality support. The report details specific findings to help families understand the current care provision and identify areas for potential development within the home.
On safety, the report highlights that people and their relatives consistently reported insufficient staffing levels, leading to delays in essential care and support. While recruitment processes were found to be safe, the reliance on agency staff who were not familiar with individual needs posed a risk, and the lack of engaging activities left residents feeling bored. The effective handling of care meant that people's needs were assessed and their care plans were kept up-to-date, ensuring they received a nutritious diet and that healthcare professionals were consulted when necessary. However, staff had not received specialist training in certain medical conditions, and risk assessments for distressed residents lacked detailed guidance for consistent support. In terms of how caring the service is, residents were treated with respect and dignity, and staff supported them to maintain their independence and make daily choices. The home was also found to be clean and safe, with good infection control measures in place. Regarding the responsiveness of the service, the report notes that while fire safety was managed and emergency evacuation plans were in place, some areas of the service were in need of redecoration to better support residents with dementia. Medicines were managed safely, and residents were supported to manage their own medication where assessed as appropriate, though guidance for "when required" medicines for distress was lacking. The leadership of the service was found to require improvement. The report states that there was no registered manager in post at the time of inspection, and staff reported feeling demoralised and unsupported by management. While maintenance was carried out promptly and responded well to resident feedback, the lack of a clear vision for the service and consistent leadership practices were identified as areas needing attention to ensure the ongoing quality of care.
