What inspectors found

Maylands is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care for adults with learning disabilities and dementia. Residents and their families consistently report that people are happy, comfortable, and feel secure living at the home. The environment is clean, well-maintained, and properly adapted with helpful features like lower beds and accessible bathrooms, while thorough recruitment checks and safety protocols ensure sufficient staffing levels and robust infection control.

However, the recent inspection highlighted several important areas needing improvement regarding safety oversight and record-keeping. Specifically, medication management had shortcomings, such as missing documentation for pain relief patches, unrecorded night-time administration, and unverified handwritten medical entries. Additionally, risk assessments for specific health conditions lacked crucial day-to-day guidance for staff, and the home did not properly track accident and incident patterns.

When it comes to daily support, staff demonstrate strong skills and a solid understanding of individual needs. They work closely with external healthcare professionals to respond quickly to changes in resident health, ensuring proper dietary support and comprehensive pre-admission assessments.

The atmosphere at the home is notably warm and compassionate. Staff interact with residents with genuine kindness, patience, and mutual respect, fostering a welcoming, family-like environment where meaningful relationships clearly thrive.

Care is tailored to promote individual independence and personal choice. Residents are actively involved in daily decisions, and staff serve as strong advocates for their rights, successfully helping them navigate complex choices and healthcare decisions.

Feedback from families, staff, and visiting professionals remains broadly positive, reflecting a caring and inclusive daily culture. Nonetheless, leadership must address the identified administrative and medication tracking gaps to ensure consistent safety across all operations.
