This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of Brewery House, a care home for younger adults with learning disabilities and autistic spectrum disorder. The inspection assessed how safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led the service is. The report highlights the home's commitment to person-centred care and promoting independence, aligning with best practice guidance. It details specific findings across key areas, noting areas of strength and identifying points for further development. This summary aims to give families a clear, concise understanding of the service's performance.
Regarding safety, staff are trained to protect residents from abuse and understand how to report concerns. There are sufficient staff to ensure residents are safe and supported. While medicines are administered safely with appropriate training, the medicine cabinet was not large enough and a replacement was ordered. The home was found to be clean and free from infection risks. However, the inspection identified a lack of consistent monitoring for risks such as burns from hot surfaces and falls from open windows, though immediate action was taken to rectify these issues once identified.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs are assessed and care plans are regularly reviewed with a focus on independence and enjoyment. Staff receive good training and support, although some felt formal supervisions were not always as regular as they would like. Residents are supported to eat and drink well and have access to healthcare professionals, with health action plans in place. Further work is planned to improve regular dental and hygienist checks.
On the caring aspect, staff show genuine care and interact with residents in a kind, respectful, and sensitive manner, knowing their preferences and histories well. Residents are supported to express their views and be involved in decisions about their care, with advocacy services available when needed. Staff are motivated and passionate about their work, building good relationships and prioritising residents' well-being.
The service is responsive in planning personalised care that reflects residents' choices and preferences, enabling them to participate in a variety of activities and maintain relationships. Communication needs are assessed and supported, with information provided in accessible formats. There is a system for handling complaints, although none have been made since the last inspection. Limited information was available regarding end-of-life care preferences for the younger adults living at the service.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, staff understand their roles and report positive experiences working at Brewery House, highlighting a calm environment and commitment from the team. However, the management's oversight and auditing processes need to be more robust to proactively identify and address areas for improvement before inspections. While staff are engaged and encouraged to share ideas, the leadership's ability to consistently ensure risks are managed and lessons are learned requires further development.
