Inspected 17 April 2019 · report published 21 May 2019What inspectors found
Bury Lodge Nursing Home in Alverstoke provides accommodation, nursing, and personal care for up to 22 older individuals, the majority of whom live with dementia. During the unannounced inspection, residents and their families shared that they felt happy, well-cared for, and secure living in the home. The management and a consistent core team of staff work proactively to deliver personalized support, maintain community connections, and ensure a good quality of life.
Residents were protected from avoidable harm and felt safe in the hands of attentive staff, though inspectors identified and swiftly resolved a couple of worn or dirty chairs that posed initial infection control risks. Care outcomes were consistently positive, supported by effective teamwork and strong links with local healthcare services, although the management acknowledged that initial assessment paperwork and staff supervision schedules needed minor improvements to ensure total consistency.
Individuals were treated with genuine compassion, dignity, and respect, with staff showing a strong understanding of personal communication needs, though the service was advised to broaden its initial assessment documentation to capture all protected equality characteristics fully. The home responded well to individual preferences by offering tailored activities, maintaining a dementia-friendly environment, and carefully adapting meals to meet dietary needs while encouraging independence. Finally, the service was effectively led by an approachable manager and supported by robust auditing systems, with staff and relatives speaking very positively about the overall leadership and open communication.
