Inspected 11 April 2022 · report published 10 May 2022What inspectors found
Cameron House Care Home underwent a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to assess the quality of care provided to its residents. This report provides a comprehensive overview of the home's performance across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, caring approach, responsiveness, and leadership. The inspection aimed to understand how well the home supports residents, particularly those with complex needs, ensuring their well-being and quality of life.
In terms of safety, while the home is generally clean and residents feel secure, there were some areas for improvement. Staff were reminded of the correct use of personal protective equipment, and protocols for "as required" medicines were being updated to be more person-centred. A new recording system was introduced to track the use of thickeners, an important measure to prevent choking. Staffing levels in communal areas were noted for review on days when the activities organiser was not on duty.
Regarding effectiveness, the care provided consistently achieves good outcomes for residents, promoting a good quality of life. Improvements have been made in oral care, with individual health plans in place. Staff receive essential training and feel well-supported, contributing to their ability to meet residents' health needs effectively. Residents enjoy the food and have choices, and the home is adapted to meet individual needs, although further dementia-friendly signage is being considered.
The caring aspect of the service is a strong point, with staff demonstrating kindness, compassion, and respect. Residents and their families consistently describe the staff as kind and caring, highlighting positive interactions and a deep understanding of individual needs. The home uses "This Is Me" documents to help staff build rapport and understand residents' life histories, fostering meaningful engagement.
In terms of responsiveness, people's needs are met through good organisation and delivery of care. While the activities programme has seen some improvements, there's a recognition that care staff need more capacity to facilitate activities on days the dedicated organiser is not present. Personalised care plans ensure residents have choice and control, and communication with families is generally good, adapting to current circumstances.
Finally, the leadership at Cameron House is effective, with a robust quality assurance system in place. Audits are conducted regularly, and action plans are implemented to address any issues. Incidents and accidents are reviewed to prevent recurrence, and complaints are handled appropriately. The management team is committed to continuous improvement and ensuring the home is well-led.
