This report summarises an inspection of 22 Prices Avenue, a care home for up to six people with learning disabilities. The inspection focused on how the service ensures people are safe and well-led, with the aim of providing families with an overview of the care provided. It details findings in key areas, aiming to offer transparency and insight into the home's performance.
On safety, the home ensures people are protected from avoidable harm through staff who know residents well and understand how to protect them. Risks are assessed and managed effectively, with clear guidance in place to support residents. While staff consistently administer routine medications, there was an instance where guidance for applying skin cream and its recording needed improvement, which the manager has addressed. Infection control measures are robust, and staff are safely recruited, ensuring adequate staffing levels to support residents' needs.
Regarding effectiveness, staff support residents in medicine management to promote independence and achieve good health outcomes. They understand and implement principles to prevent over-medication. Care plans reflect residents' needs, supporting their individuality and enjoyment of life. Residents are encouraged to participate in activities of their choosing, and staff receive training to provide care effectively, working in partnership with healthcare professionals.
The caring aspect of the service is highlighted by staff providing kind and compassionate care. Residents' privacy and dignity are protected, and staff understand and respond to individual needs. Residents are safeguarded from abuse, with staff trained to recognise and report concerns. Care plans are person-centred, promoting wellbeing and enjoyment of life, and residents can engage in activities both within the service and the wider community.
In terms of responsiveness, residents are supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives, with staff promoting independence and using the least restrictive approach. Communication needs are understood and met, enabling residents to understand information given to them. The service works within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring decisions are made in residents' best interests. Visitors are welcomed without restriction.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, there is a clear understanding of the service's aims and values, with people at the heart of care. While the leadership team is generally effective, a recent entry in a resident's record was noted as being authoritarian, which the manager has addressed. The registered manager possesses the skills and experience to oversee the service effectively, with robust quality assurance systems in place. Feedback from residents, families, and professionals is actively sought and used to improve the service, fostering an open and inclusive culture.
