This report summarises an inspection of Cheviot Nursing Home conducted on 30 October 2018. The inspection reviewed the overall quality of care provided, building upon previous findings. People and their relatives generally expressed positive views about their experience at the home, highlighting a safe and caring environment. The service aims to support up to 33 older people, including those with dementia, and was caring for 28 individuals at the time of the visit.
On safety, the home has systems in place to manage risks, and staff are well-trained in safeguarding. However, risk assessments were not always clearly recorded or reviewed in a timely manner, and some documentation lacked sufficient detail, prompting a recommendation for improvement in these areas. Staff are recruited appropriately with necessary checks, and there are enough staff to meet resident needs, with medicines managed safely and infection control procedures in place.
In terms of how effective the care is, staff receive good training and support. Residents are offered choices at mealtimes and are supported in accessing healthcare services. The premises are adapted to meet residents' needs, and staff demonstrate a good understanding of residents' health changes. However, some staff training, such as for the Mental Capacity Act, needed updating, and the provider has scheduled external courses to address this.
The service is caring, with staff described as warm, kind, and compassionate. They know residents well and treat them with dignity and respect, supporting their independence and relationships.
Regarding how responsive the service is, residents are supported by a highly skilled and motivated staff team who understand their needs exceptionally well, allowing residents maximum choice and control over their lives. Feedback from residents and their families has been very positive, with particular commendation for outstanding end-of-life care and support.
Finally, on how well-led the service is, the management team fosters a positive culture and actively seeks feedback from residents, relatives, and staff to drive continuous improvement. Quality assurance processes are in place to monitor the service, and senior management is committed to enhancing the quality of care provided. Staff collaborate effectively with other specialists to ensure comprehensive care.
