Inspected 13 September 2022 · report published 24 November 2022What inspectors found
This CQC report provides an overview of Compton House, a residential care home supporting adults with learning disabilities, autism, and other complex needs. The inspection assessed the service across five key areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led. The overall findings indicate areas for development to ensure the highest quality of care and support for all residents.
In terms of safety, while there were appropriate systems to protect residents from abuse and the home was generally in line with the Mental Capacity Act, concerns were raised regarding recruitment processes where gaps in employment history were noted. Additionally, while staffing levels were observed to be adequate during the inspection, there was a reliance on agency staff, and some fire safety records required improvement.
Regarding effective care, residents were mostly supported with choices and in a least restrictive way, with efforts made to update care plans to be more person-centred. However, there were instances where established guidance, particularly regarding communication preferences, was not consistently followed.
The caring aspect of the service was positively viewed, with residents expressing happiness and relatives feeling their loved ones were safe. The ethos and values of the leadership were described as passionate about empowering residents, and training was being used to develop best practices.
In assessing how responsive the service is, the report noted that residents were offered regular feedback opportunities, though the feedback forms used were generic. While positive relationships were built between the registered manager and residents, more could be done to ensure residents are fully involved in shaping their own support.
Finally, for the well-led domain, leadership was passionate, but quality assurance processes were not always effective in identifying issues, and incident investigations sometimes lacked thoroughness. Record-keeping related to the management of the home, such as fire checks and medicine counts, also required improvement to ensure accuracy and completeness.
This is an editorial summary intended to make the inspection findings easier to read — it is not a substitute for the full report, and is not medical or care advice.
