Dean Wood Manor is a converted grade two listed nursing home in Wigan that can accommodate up to 49 adults, including younger people, older individuals, and those living with dementia or physical disabilities. Following its recent re-registration, the service received an inspection to evaluate its overall quality and safety. Residents and their families shared positive feedback about the atmosphere, the management, and the daily support provided, emphasizing that the environment feels welcoming and well-run.
Residents consistently felt safe and well-protected from harm by approachable staff who understood their individual needs. There were enough team members on duty to respond promptly to requests for help, and the building was found to be clean with proper infection control measures in place. While medicine administration was generally secure, inspectors noted a few initial recording issues with a newly introduced electronic system and some as-needed medications, which the management team addressed quickly during the visit.
The home delivered effective care supported by appropriate assessments and adherence to the Mental Capacity Act, ensuring that restrictions were authorised legally in people's best interests. Staff received solid training, regular supervision, and thorough inductions to carry out their roles competently. Residents enjoyed appetizing meals with plenty of snacks and drinks throughout the day, and timely referrals were made to external healthcare professionals like dieticians and GPs whenever health needs arose.
Staff treated residents with genuine warmth, patience, and respect, ensuring their privacy and dignity were carefully upheld during personal care. Relatives highlighted the empathy shown by the team and appreciated being actively involved in ongoing care planning and reviews. The culture within the home encouraged open communication, and families felt fully informed about their loved ones' well-being and any updates.
Care plans were personalized and detailed people's specific preferences, routines, and how they wished to be supported. Social and recreational needs were actively met through a structured activities programme organized by an activity coordinator and staff members. Additionally, a clear complaints procedure was displayed around the building, ensuring residents and families felt comfortable raising any concerns.
The management team utilized robust systems to monitor the overall quality and effectiveness of the service. Actions and improvements were regularly tracked through an active development plan, and the registered manager received strong praise from both residents and relatives. Everyone spoken with during the inspection confirmed they would confidently recommend the home to others.
