What inspectors found

Denmead Grange is a care home that provides accommodation and personal care for up to 60 individuals, including those living with dementia. This report summarises the findings from a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The inspection focused on five key areas: safety, effectiveness, caring practice, responsiveness, and leadership. Overall, the service has been rated positively across all these domains, indicating a good standard of care. The report highlights both strengths and areas identified for further development, offering families valuable insights into the home's operation.

Regarding safety, residents and their families reported feeling secure, and staff demonstrated a good understanding of safeguarding procedures. While risk assessments were in place and environmental safety was well managed, some care records required more detailed completion, which the manager addressed promptly. Medicine management saw improvements following inspection findings, and infection control measures were robust. Staff recruitment was safe, though some residents and relatives felt staffing levels could be improved, a point the manager agreed to investigate further.

In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs were assessed, and staff received comprehensive training. The service ensured people were supported to eat and drink well, with appetizing and nutritious meals provided. While food monitoring records needed refinement, the home implemented a new meeting to ensure their completion. The environment was adapted to support independence, particularly for those with dementia, featuring dementia-friendly design elements. Care plans were being updated to ensure they accurately reflected current needs, and staff were trained in the Mental Capacity Act, though some Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards applications were pending assessment.

The caring aspect of the service received positive feedback, with staff noted for their kindness and knowledge about the residents they support. Although some felt staff had limited time for individual attention, the manager has increased support for one-to-one interactions. Residents' diverse needs and interests were well supported, and end-of-life care received compassionate feedback. The service strives to support residents in making decisions about their care in a person-centred way.

On how responsive the service is, residents were supported to make choices, and care was planned with individual needs and wishes in mind. A varied and stimulating activities program was offered, catering to residents' interests. Feedback highlighted the compassionate care provided during end-of-life stages, with care plans being further developed in this area. The service actively sought to understand and meet residents' diverse needs and interests.

Finally, regarding how well-led the service is, a positive culture was promoted, confirmed by staff, residents, and relatives. A leadership team with clear roles was in place, and regulatory responsibilities were met. The provider maintained a quality assurance system to monitor the service's safety and quality. While initial improvements were made in accident analysis and staff guidance for medicine administration, the manager consistently acted on feedback to enhance service delivery.
