This report summarises an inspection of East Hill House Residential Care Home, which provides personal care and accommodation for up to 34 older people, many living with dementia. The inspection focused on assessing the safety, effectiveness, caring nature, responsiveness, and leadership of the home. Overall, the inspectors found the home to be well-managed and providing a good standard of care, with particular strengths in community engagement and responsiveness.
Regarding safety, residents reported feeling very safe, with staff consistently checking on them and ensuring the environment was secure. The home had robust systems for safeguarding, risk assessment, and medication management, with staff receiving appropriate training. While most medication records were accurate, a minor discrepancy was noted during a count, and a malfunctioning medication fridge was being addressed. Infection control practices were good, although a minor security issue with the clinical waste area was immediately resolved.
On the effectiveness of care, residents' needs were thoroughly assessed before admission, and care plans were detailed, reflecting a good understanding of individual requirements and preferences. Staff were well-trained and supported, with a commitment to ongoing development, particularly in dementia care. The home ensured residents received adequate nutrition and hydration, with flexible catering options and consistent monitoring of weight. Residents were also well-supported to access external healthcare services, and the physical environment was adapted to meet their needs, though some redecoration is planned.
In terms of caring, staff were observed treating residents with kindness, compassion, and respect. Residents and their families felt involved in care planning and developed positive relationships with the staff, who demonstrated a good understanding of individual preferences and life histories. Residents were given a voice in the home’s operations, with some involved in interviewing new staff.
The service was exceptionally responsive, particularly in its engagement with the local community. The registered manager actively prioritised stimulating activities and community involvement, which significantly improved residents' quality of life and fostered a sense of value and belonging. Feedback from residents, relatives, and professionals highlighted the exceptional nature of these community links.
Finally, the home was well-led by a motivated management team committed to an inclusive environment. The registered manager provided effective oversight, addressing concerns promptly. The report notes a recommendation to evaluate the impact of service initiatives to ensure consistently exceptional outcomes for residents.
