Fairby Grange is a care home that provides accommodation and personal care for up to 27 older people, offering both permanent and respite support. This inspection report by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an overview of the service's performance across five key areas. The inspection was prompted by concerns about various aspects of care, including incident reporting, safeguarding, medication, infection control, staff training, risk assessments, and fire regulations. The aim was to assess whether the home was meeting essential standards of quality and safety.
On safety, the report highlights that while some improvements have been made, there were continued concerns. Medicines were not always stored at the correct temperature, and administration records for one resident were not consistently checked by two staff members to ensure accuracy. Risks to residents were not always identified, particularly for those on blood-thinning medication, and there were issues with managing building-related risks. In addition, some staff were not always adhering to COVID-19 guidance by wearing masks correctly. While staffing levels were adequate during the day, there were concerns about insufficient staff at night for potential fire evacuations.
In terms of how effective the care is, the service was found to be effective. Residents' needs were assessed prior to them moving in, ensuring that care plans were comprehensive and met national guidance for aspects like nutrition. Staff received regular supervision and appraisals, and many held qualifications in health and social care, indicating a commitment to developing their skills and knowledge.
The service was also found to be caring. Staff treated residents with respect and maintained their privacy and dignity. Residents reported feeling safe and comfortable, with staff being approachable and responsive to concerns. There was a good range of activities available, encouraging residents to maintain relationships and form new friendships within the home.
Regarding how responsive the service is, residents had access to a variety of activities tailored to their needs and preferences. The home promoted the maintenance of relationships with relatives and the development of new friendships. Residents felt included in the running of the home, and staff were encouraged to raise concerns and suggestions during regular meetings and supervision.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, the report indicates that the governance of the service was not always robust enough. While improvements had been made since the last inspection, areas requiring further attention were identified. This included aspects of medication management and the overall monitoring of the service's quality and safety, which the provider is working to address.
