Inspected 25 August 2017 · report published 29 September 2017What inspectors found
This CQC inspection report for Footprints found that the service is well-run and provides good care for children and young people with disabilities. The inspection focused on key areas to ensure the service is safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led, examining how well staff understand and meet individual needs.
On safety, people felt secure and protected from harm, with clear procedures for reporting concerns and robust risk management. Staff were well-recruited, and there were sufficient numbers to ensure needs were met, with effective medication management and regular safety checks on the premises and equipment.
In terms of how effective the care is, staff were trained and knowledgeable, supporting people to make their own decisions and understand their options. While staff understood the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, formal consent for certain restrictions, like bed rails and wheelchair straps, needed to be fully established, which the manager immediately began to address. The service also effectively supported people's nutritional needs and overall health.
The caring aspect of the service was evident in how people were treated with kindness and compassion, with staff taking the time to understand and respect individual preferences and dignity. Communication was adapted to individual needs, and privacy was consistently maintained. Families were welcomed, and end-of-life care preferences were well-documented.
Regarding responsiveness, care plans were person-centred and easily understood, involving people and their relatives in planning and reviews. Feedback was encouraged, and complaints were handled appropriately. The service fostered strong relationships and promoted independence and community links.
Finally, on being well-led, the service operated with a culture of openness and empowerment, driven by clear values and effective leadership from the registered manager. Robust quality assurance processes were in place, and important events were reported to the CQC in a timely manner.
