This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) details an inspection of Griffin Lodge, a residential care home for individuals with learning disabilities and sensory impairments. The inspection assessed the service across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership. Overall, the findings indicate significant improvements since the previous inspection, with a focus on person-centred care and promoting independence. The report highlights the commitment of the staff and management to providing a supportive environment.
Regarding safety, the home is now notably cleaner and free from unpleasant odours, with robust infection control measures in place. Staff are well-trained in safeguarding, and recruitment processes are thorough, ensuring suitable individuals are employed. Detailed risk assessments are consistently reviewed and updated, and medication is managed safely. While there were previous concerns about agency staff use, the report notes that any agency staff now employed are familiar with the residents, and there are sufficient permanent staff to meet needs.
The effectiveness of the care provided has also improved significantly. Staff receive comprehensive induction and ongoing training, including in positive behaviour support (PBS), equipping them to manage challenges constructively and in the least restrictive way possible. Care is delivered in line with best practice guidance and legal requirements, including the Mental Capacity Act. People's nutritional needs are met, and the home is adapted to support residents' needs, although some areas require redecoration which is planned.
In terms of how caring the service is, residents and their relatives consistently described staff as patient, kind, and compassionate. Staff clearly know the residents well, engaging in warm and friendly interactions, and showing genuine pride in residents' achievements. The service actively promotes equality and diversity, respecting residents' individual preferences, cultural beliefs, and right to privacy and confidentiality.
The service's responsiveness is highlighted by its commitment to planning personalised care that genuinely reflects residents' choices and preferences. Care plans are regularly reviewed and updated to meet changing needs. There is a good range of activities available, tailored to individual interests and hobbies, helping to combat social isolation and promote engagement with the wider community.
Finally, the leadership and management of the home are described as effective. Systems for quality assurance, including regular audits, are now well-established, and residents are positive about the registered manager and the positive changes implemented. The management team is approachable and receptive to feedback, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
