What inspectors found

This report details the findings of an inspection at Hadfield House, a care home providing personal care and accommodation for up to 28 individuals living with dementia and mental health conditions. The inspection, which took place on November 6th and 7th, 2018, found significant improvements since the previous inspection in October 2017, addressing previous concerns and demonstrating progress across all key areas of care. The home's commitment to enhancing the living environment and ensuring robust safety procedures was particularly noted.

Regarding safety, the home has made substantial progress in improving its environment to mitigate health and safety risks for residents. Measures such as fitting window restrictors and ensuring hazardous chemical cupboards are locked are in place. While a formal legionella risk assessment was still in its early stages, the provider was actively taking steps to control risks. Medicines are now managed safely, with clear guidance for 'when required' medications and appropriately stored creams, although a recommendation was made to enhance the detail in records for fluid thickeners, which was actioned during the inspection. Safe recruitment practices are now firmly established, with thorough checks for all new staff, contributing to a feeling of safety among residents and their relatives.

In terms of how effective the care is, staff receive comprehensive induction and ongoing training, tailored to ensure residents receive effective support. The food provided is enjoyed by residents, with dietary needs and preferences reflected in the menus. Staff demonstrate a good understanding of residents' physical, mental, and medical needs and liaise effectively with healthcare professionals. Furthermore, staff are knowledgeable about the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, promoting residents' autonomy.

On the caring aspect, residents are supported by committed staff who understand their needs, fostering relationships built on trust and a sense of being valued. Residents' privacy and dignity are consistently respected and promoted. People feel involved in their care decisions and express that their rights are valued. Staff interactions observed were meaningful and supportive, contributing to a warm and respectful atmosphere.

Concerning how responsive the service is, residents are supported to achieve their desired quality of life, with care plans developed in partnership with them. A variety of activities are offered, both within the home and in the wider community, encouraging engagement and independence. There is a clear and suitable complaints procedure in place to address any concerns raised by residents or their families, ensuring their voices are heard.

In terms of leadership, the service has demonstrated a positive and sustained trajectory of improvement. A registered manager is in place, overseeing effective systems for monitoring and auditing the quality of care. The provider understands their legal obligations to inform the Care Quality Commission of any significant incidents, ensuring transparency and accountability. The manager and registered provider actively work to improve the service.
