This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) details an inspection of Haighfield Care Home, which took place following an incident involving a resident's injury. The inspection focused on assessing the overall safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership of the home. The findings indicate areas where improvements are needed to ensure consistent quality and safety for all residents. This summary highlights the key observations across each of these crucial areas to help families understand the home's current performance.
Regarding safety, the inspection found that the home environment was not always secure. This included unsecured storage of creams and cleaning products, as well as cluttered corridors that could pose a trip hazard. Fire safety assessments were also overdue, and there had been a previous electrical incident. While medication administration was generally safe, some storage and temperature monitoring needed improvement.
In terms of how effective the care is, the report noted that while residents and relatives generally felt well cared for, the effectiveness of the service is impacted by the need for improvements in other areas. The core principles of supporting choice and control were in place and supported by policies.
On caring, residents and their relatives expressed positive feelings about the care provided, describing staff as kind and attentive. They reported feeling safe and well looked after, highlighting that the care received enabled them to achieve good outcomes, even with ongoing health conditions.
In terms of how responsive the service is, the report indicated that residents and their families were not consistently asked for their views on the service provided. Feedback mechanisms such as regular meetings and satisfaction surveys were not being conducted as frequently as expected, meaning opportunities to gather and act on opinions were missed.
Finally, concerning how well-led the service is, governance systems require improvement. Many staff had not received regular supervision or annual appraisals, and team and resident meetings were infrequent. While the current home manager conducts daily checks, these were not documented. Confidential information was also not always stored securely. Despite these leadership and governance concerns, staff generally spoke positively about the home manager.
