Inspected 27 January 2021 · report published 6 March 2021What inspectors found
Kacee Lodge is a comfortable, single-storey home in Colchester providing personalized care for up to seven adults with learning disabilities and autism. The environment is deliberately designed to blend seamlessly into the local residential area without any institutional signs or cameras, helping residents live as independently and normally as possible alongside a dedicated staff team.
Residents are kept safe through careful management of daily risks, proper medication handling, and strong safeguarding practices where staff know how to spot and report concerns. However, the management team needs to improve its recruitment procedures by consistently obtaining employment references and thoroughly assessing any past criminal convictions disclosed on staff background checks.
The team provides effective support tailored to individual health conditions, ensuring residents have balanced diets of their choice and prompt access to medical professionals like GPs and speech therapists. Staff receive thorough, ongoing training in specialized areas such as epilepsy management and positive behavior support, though some parts of the home's interior and furniture are dated and require planned modernization.
Residents are treated with genuine warmth by staff who know them well and involve them in daily choices about their home and care. The service uses accessible information so residents can easily understand decisions, and families are kept closely involved in their loved ones' lives.
Care is highly responsive to changing needs, with staff acting promptly on health updates and working well with outside agencies to coordinate support. While residents are helped to enjoy activities and maintain fitness, the service needs to do more to ensure individuals regularly access socially and culturally relevant community activities.
Leadership ensures that incidents are investigated openly and lessons are learned to prevent future issues, with previous training and financial oversight concerns successfully resolved. Even so, internal management systems failed to catch recruitment oversights, laundry cleanliness issues, and a lack of focus on people's protected characteristics, showing that local governance still requires tighter oversight.
