Keyll House is a residential care home for up to six individuals with learning disabilities and/or autistic traits. This inspection report provides an overview of the service's performance across several key areas, highlighting strengths and areas for development. The overall aim is to assess how effectively and safely the home supports its residents.
Regarding the safety of residents, the home maintained good standards. Safeguarding procedures were robust, with staff well-trained to identify and report concerns, and relatives felt their loved ones were safe. Risk assessments were detailed, and the premises were kept safe with regular checks. Medication management was also secure, and staff were supported in adhering to principles to avoid over-medication. While infection control measures were generally in place, some staff were observed not using PPE in line with current guidance, though this was addressed immediately by management.
In terms of effective care, residents were supported to develop independence and skills. However, care was not always flexible enough to meet individual needs and preferences, with plans in place to introduce more adaptable staff shift patterns. The care team was noted as kind and respectful, understanding their safeguarding responsibilities.
The caring aspect of the service was positive, with a staff team described as kind and respectful who understood their safeguarding duties. Residents were supported to have maximum choice and control, with staff acting in their best interests and using the least restrictive approach. Relatives' feedback was listened to, contributing to the home's culture.
On responsiveness, the service faced challenges. Residents did not always receive the support needed to pursue interests or engage in meaningful activities, often due to staffing shortages impacting community access. While some residents enjoyed local outings and shopping, there were instances where individuals missed out on planned activities. Communication needs were not always consistently met, with some directive language used by staff, though training is planned to improve this.
Regarding how well-led the service is, improvements were needed. While a positive ethos existed, good outcomes for residents were not always achieved due to ongoing staffing vacancies and a lack of structured support for some individuals. Agency staff sometimes lacked required training for community support. Communication with relatives varied, with some desiring more frequent updates. The home did have systems for monitoring and improving care aspects, and staff reported positive feedback regarding the registered manager's approach and team meetings.
