What inspectors found

Little Heaton Care Home in Middleton provides accommodation and personal care for up to 25 people, including individuals living with dementia. The recent inspection highlights a warm, friendly atmosphere with kind and attentive staff who are well-supported and trained. However, the report points out important areas requiring attention, particularly regarding the physical environment, infection control practices, and management oversight.

When it comes to safety, the home has robust safeguarding procedures and enough staff to provide prompt care, alongside properly managed equipment and safety checks. On the downside, some areas needed cleaning and minor repairs, certain infection control practices were missed, and there were minor paperwork discrepancies regarding medicines.

The care provided is effective, ensuring balanced diets, regular weight monitoring, and prompt referrals to healthcare professionals. Staff understand legal frameworks around mental capacity and consent, though the environment needs better adaptations—such as clearer nameplates and memory aids—to better support residents living with dementia.

Residents are supported by a kind and caring team who promote independence and treat people with respect. However, a privacy issue arose during the visit when confidential resuscitation notices were displayed outside bedroom doors, which was addressed and removed immediately.

The home responds well to individual needs with detailed care plans and good community links, and families feel comfortable raising concerns with the open management team. While there is a scheduled plan for activities, some residents and relatives noted that daily organized activities can feel limited at times.

Management and leadership face challenges, as regular internal audits failed to catch the environmental, infection control, and medicine documentation issues found during the inspection. Despite this oversight, the registered manager responded immediately with an action plan and maintains an open, supportive culture that staff and families appreciate.
