This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an assessment of Maple Manor, a care home for individuals with learning disabilities and autistic people. The inspection examined key areas of service provision to understand the lived experiences of residents and the effectiveness of the home's operations. It highlights both areas where the service excels and aspects requiring further attention to ensure the highest standards of care are consistently met for all individuals residing at Maple Manor.
Regarding the safety of the home, while residents are protected from abuse and staff are knowledgeable about safeguarding procedures, there are concerns about fire safety arrangements. Specifically, there were insufficient fire marshals on duty and personal emergency evacuation plans lacked detailed information to effectively support residents during a fire.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents receive kind and compassionate support that respects their dignity, and staff understand and respond to individual needs. However, not all staff have completed essential training on learning disability and autism, and some refresher training in key areas is overdue.
Concerning the caring aspect, residents are supported to have maximum choice and control in their lives, with staff actively avoiding restraint and enabling people to personalise their living spaces. Staff are aware of and knowledgeable about risk management strategies to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents.
In relation to how responsive the service is, residents are able to communicate effectively with staff who understand their individual communication needs. The home is also adaptable in its design and decoration to meet the diverse needs of its residents, with bedrooms personalised to reflect individual interests.
Finally, looking at how well-led the service is, the registered manager demonstrates the skills and experience necessary for their role, and staff feel respected and supported by the management team. However, governance arrangements at the provider level are not sufficiently robust, and there is a lack of provider oversight to effectively monitor and drive improvements in the quality of care.
