This report summarises the recent inspection of Mercers, a care home providing support for individuals with complex needs, including mental health, learning disabilities, and autism. The inspection focused on assessing the quality and safety of care provided, with the aim of ensuring residents receive appropriate support and live fulfilling lives. Overall, the inspection identified significant improvements since the previous review, leading to the service being moved out of special measures. This summary provides a snapshot of the findings across key areas.
On safety, residents are protected from avoidable harm, with effective safeguarding systems and thorough risk assessments in place, including specific plans for swallowing difficulties and choking. Recruitment processes are robust, ensuring staff are suitable for their roles, and medication is administered safely with clear protocols for handling errors. Staff are trained in infection control, and the environment has seen notable improvements in cleanliness and maintenance.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs are assessed comprehensively before admission, and care plans are regularly updated. Staff receive good induction and ongoing training, including the Care Certificate, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge. Residents are supported to maintain independence in meal preparation, with personalised diets and choice encouraged. The service also promotes healthier lives, with timely referrals to healthcare professionals when needed, and strong adherence to the Mental Capacity Act ensuring resident choice and control.
Regarding how caring the service is, people living at Mercers feel well looked after and are treated with dignity and respect. Staff demonstrate kindness and compassion, actively involving residents in their care and respecting their individual needs and preferences. Residents reported positive experiences, with some indicating significant improvements in their well-being and a desire for greater independence.
On responsiveness, systems are in place for residents to raise complaints and concerns, which are addressed appropriately. Staff liaise effectively with other healthcare professionals to ensure residents' health needs are met. The service aims to enable residents to live as ordinary a life as possible, supporting their independence and inclusion in the community.
Finally, regarding how well-led the service is, while improvements have been made, further development is needed. The inspection noted that quality assurance processes did not always effectively identify all issues, and more work is required to ensure themes and trends are consistently managed. Although audits are conducted, their effectiveness in driving sustained improvement needs to be enhanced. The provider and registered manager are committed to continuous improvement, and sustained progress in these areas is expected.
