This report details the findings of an unannounced inspection of Middleton Hall Care Home conducted on December 4, 2018. The inspection focused on ensuring the home meets legal requirements and provides a high quality of care. It follows up on previous concerns regarding documentation accuracy, which have now been addressed. The inspection assessed the home across five key areas: safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership.
Regarding safety, inspectors noted that the home has robust measures in place to protect residents, including secure access to the building and comprehensive safeguarding policies and training for staff. Staffing levels were found to be sufficient, and the recruitment process is thorough, ensuring suitability for working with vulnerable individuals. Risk assessments are regularly updated, and health and safety procedures, including fire safety and medication management, are well-maintained. While medication administration was safe overall, a minor detail regarding specific thickener instructions was promptly addressed. Infection control measures are in place, with a clean environment and appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
In terms of effectiveness, the care provided is well-documented, with care plans reflecting residents' health and personal needs. Training for staff is comprehensive and regularly updated, with a supportive supervision and appraisal system in place. Nutritional and hydration records are now accurate, and residents reported satisfaction with the plentiful and nutritious food. The inspectors observed staff to be consistently kind, patient, and friendly, showing respect for residents' dignity and privacy. Information is provided in accessible formats, and confidentiality is a priority. Care plans are person-centred, incorporating residents' preferences, and reviews involve both residents and their families. While a variety of activities are offered, some residents expressed a desire for more options. The home has a clear complaints procedure and has received numerous compliments. Palliative care training is being provided for staff.
The service is well-led, with an approachable registered manager who fosters an open-door policy and is supported by the provider. Regular audits and checks are in place to maintain standards, and the home demonstrates good collaborative working relationships with external agencies and the wider community. A suggestion from residents regarding napkin availability during meals was noted and agreed to be implemented.
