This report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) provides an independent assessment of Heathcotes Middleton, a care home providing accommodation and personal care for individuals with learning disabilities and/or mental health diagnoses. The inspection focused on five key areas: safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership. Overall, the inspection identified areas for improvement, particularly in medication management and governance, while acknowledging strengths in the delivery of effective, caring, and responsive support for residents. The findings aim to offer transparency and insight for families considering this home for their loved ones.
Regarding the safety of the service, improvements were noted in medication management, with new systems being introduced to address previous concerns. Staff received relevant training, and staffing levels were deemed sufficient to support residents' independence. Positive aspects of safety included robust safeguarding from abuse and effective risk assessment processes, alongside safe recruitment practices. However, specific concerns were raised about the accuracy and administration of medicines, including topical creams and controlled drugs, along with the effectiveness of some audits.
In terms of how effective the care is, residents' needs were assessed and care was delivered in line with current standards, leading to consistently good outcomes. Staff demonstrated a good understanding of individual needs and were well-trained. The service also supported residents in maintaining healthy diets and accessing necessary healthcare professionals, with positive feedback from relatives and external agencies. However, the report highlighted that formal support systems like team meetings and supervisions needed to be re-established to better support staff and promote teamwork.
The service was found to be caring, with staff treating residents with compassion, kindness, dignity, and respect. Residents' diverse needs were considered, and staff demonstrated a deep understanding of the individuals they support, leading to positive relationships. Privacy, dignity, and independence were actively promoted, with residents encouraged to make decisions about their daily routines and engage in community activities. Relatives consistently reported that their family members were well-treated and respected by the staff.
On responsiveness, people's needs were met, and they were supported to maintain relationships, follow their interests, and participate in relevant activities. Residents had routines of their own choosing, and their cultural and religious needs were respected. The home facilitated connections with friends and family, with staff even assisting with visits. The accommodation itself was generally of a good standard, with plans in place for further enhancements.
Finally, in terms of how well-led the service is, areas for development were identified. While relatives were not always clear about the management structure, staff morale was reported to be improving. Efforts were underway to re-establish formal support systems for staff and enhance communication. Although various audits were conducted, their effectiveness in identifying issues needed improvement, and opportunities for residents and relatives to contribute to the home's running could be enhanced. A new registered manager was to be appointed.
