What inspectors found

Mistley Manor is a care home where residents and their families consistently praise the quality of care. The environment is noted as clean, comfortable, and safe, with staff described as kind, caring, and knowledgeable about individual needs and preferences. Residents are encouraged towards independence and have opportunities to participate in various activities that contribute to a good quality of life. The home actively involves residents in its operations and ensures their views are heard and addressed.

Regarding the safety of the service, residents feel secure, and the home has effective safeguarding procedures and robust recruitment practices. While risk assessments are generally in place, some could benefit from more detail. Most residents feel staffing levels are adequate, though a few noted occasional delays in receiving assistance, particularly at night. Medication management is safe, with clear protocols for ordering, administering, and monitoring. Infection control measures are in place, and the environment is generally well-maintained, though some mobility aids were found to be unsafe and were immediately rectified.

On the effectiveness of the care provided, residents' needs and preferences are thoroughly assessed and documented in their care plans, including personal histories and cultural considerations. Staff receive appropriate training, though some refresher courses are ongoing. The dining experience is highlighted as a positive and social event, with excellent food quality and choice. The home's design and environment are adapted to meet diverse needs, including specialized areas for those with dementia, although more sensory and comfort items were suggested. Residents are well-supported to maintain their health and access healthcare services.

In terms of caring practices, staff are consistently described as kind, caring, and professional, treating residents with dignity and respect. Residents and their representatives are involved in care planning, and their feedback is acted upon. Spiritual needs are supported, and a family liaison post helps ensure resident well-being and communication. Efforts are made to promote resident independence, with staff encouraging self-sufficiency where possible. Confidentiality and privacy are well-maintained, and initiatives like the on-site shop contribute to resident well-being and independence.

Concerning the responsiveness of the service, care plans are detailed to ensure personalized support, though specific plans for conditions like diabetes require further development to include clearer management guidelines and ensure updates are promptly reflected. The home is designed to allow residents to remain there as their needs change, fostering continuity of care. Feedback on activities is mixed, with some residents finding them enjoyable and engaging, while others desire more variety. Nonetheless, a range of activities is offered, and staff are available for social interaction.

Finally, the leadership of the service requires improvement. While the owners are actively involved and provide good support to the managers, there were instances where the registered managers did not keep the Care Quality Commission updated on significant events. The report makes a recommendation to ensure improved communication in this area.
