What inspectors found

Moss Cottage Nursing Home is a care service providing nursing and personal care to older adults and people with physical disabilities. This report summarises the findings of a recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection, focusing on how the service has improved since the last review. The inspection assessed the home across key areas, looking at how safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led the service is, with a particular emphasis on improvements made following previous recommendations.

On safety, the home is now meeting standards for medication management, with secure storage and accurate guidance for staff. Infection control measures, including in the laundry, have been significantly improved, and the home actively manages risks associated with Covid-19. While staff recruitment processes are robust and people feel safe, some residents expressed a desire for more organised activities.

In terms of how effective the care is, residents are supported to maintain a balanced diet, with staff knowledgeable about specific dietary needs. While communal areas have been redecorated, some areas require further attention, though refurbishment plans are in place. Residents' needs are regularly assessed, and care plans are updated accordingly, with staff receiving good training and support. The home also works effectively with external healthcare professionals.

Regarding caring practices, residents feel supported by a stable team of staff who know them well and respond promptly to their needs. Relatives have reported positively on the quality of care and the professional handling of any issues. Staff are trained to recognise and act on safeguarding concerns, and there are clear policies and procedures in place.

The service demonstrates responsiveness by ensuring residents are supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives, with care provided in the least restrictive way possible. Feedback from residents and relatives is actively sought and taken into account, although there is a noted wish for more varied activities to enhance daily life.

In terms of being well-led, the home now has a registered manager in post supported by a stable team, who are clear about their roles and committed to improving the service. Systems are in place for identifying and addressing risks, and lessons are learned from incidents. The manager is proactive in seeking feedback and support, and staff feel confident raising concerns, knowing they will be addressed.
