Inspected 11 March 2022 · report published 25 May 2022What inspectors found
Oaklands Care Home provides personal care and accommodation for up to 31 older people, supporting 28 residents at the time of our inspection. This summary outlines our findings across key areas of service delivery, highlighting both positive practices and areas where ongoing improvements are needed to ensure consistent quality and safety for everyone living at the home.
When looking at safety, we found that routines were not always fully reliable. While staff understood how to protect residents and responded well to incidents, some care plans lacked specific detail on how to manage risks safely, and certain medical creams did not have clear guidance for application. Additionally, some staff recruitment files contained unexplained gaps in employment history, and initial entry screening procedures were missed upon our arrival.
The care provided achieved positive outcomes for residents. Comprehensive assessments were completed before people moved in, and staff received regular training and supervision tailored to individual needs such as dementia and end-of-life care. Nutritional requirements were met well, with flexible meal choices available, and the environment was adapted to be dementia-friendly with memory boxes and personalized rooms.
Residents experienced compassionate and supportive interactions from a team that understood their preferences. People were encouraged to maintain maximum choice and control over their daily routines, and families confirmed that staff were helpful, friendly, and approachable.
Support was tailored appropriately to individual needs and changing circumstances. Residents and their relatives knew how to raise concerns and expressed confidence in the management team. Access to external healthcare professionals, such as GPs and dieticians, was maintained promptly whenever health needs shifted.
Leadership and oversight require further development. Although quality assurance systems were in place, routine internal checks failed to identify several of the record-keeping and assessment oversights discovered during our inspection visit, indicating that management monitoring needs to be more thorough.
