What inspectors found

This report summarises the findings from an unannounced inspection of Parkwood Lodge, which provides residential accommodation for adults with mental health conditions. The inspection took place on 13 and 14 November 2017, and involved speaking with residents, staff, and healthcare professionals, as well as reviewing various records. The aim was to assess the overall quality of the service and ensure it meets legal requirements.

On safety, staff demonstrated a strong understanding of how to recognise and report abuse, and robust recruitment procedures ensured that only suitable individuals were employed. Medicines were managed safely, and there were enough staff available to meet residents' needs without feeling rushed.

In terms of how effective the care is, staff were well-trained and supported, with a good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act. Residents had access to healthcare services when needed, and their nutritional needs were met through involvement in menu planning.

The service was caring, with staff described as kind, helpful, and friendly, treating residents with dignity and respect. Care plans were individualised and centred on each person's needs, and residents were supported to maintain their independence.

Regarding how responsive the service is, residents received care that met their specific needs, and staff had a good understanding of how to support individuals with their mental health. People were encouraged to participate in activities of their choice and develop daily living skills.

Finally, on how well-led the service is, the acting manager was seen as a visible and supportive leader who fostered a positive environment. Regular safety audits were conducted, and the home maintained effective partnerships with health and social care professionals.
