What inspectors found

Pax Hill Residential Home EMF Unit provides care for up to 26 residents with dementia. This recent inspection report from the CQC indicates that the home continues to offer good quality care overall, with improvements noted in several key areas. The extensive renovations and thoughtful furnishing of the premises have created a dementia-friendly environment, with a mix of communal spaces and individualised bedrooms designed to promote comfort and ease of navigation. The inspection focused on five core areas, assessing the home's performance in delivering safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led services.

Regarding safety, the home has made progress in ensuring robust recruitment processes and adequate staff training, including English language support for staff where needed. Medication management, infection control, and the upkeep of the premises are all highlighted as protective measures for residents. Staff demonstrated a strong understanding of safeguarding responsibilities, working effectively with local authorities to protect residents from abuse and discrimination.

In terms of effectiveness, staff are well-trained and supported, showing competence in their roles and contributing to a skilled and efficient service. The environment offers a variety of suitable spaces and facilities to meet residents' needs, with bedrooms tailored to individual preferences. The home's approach to care planning involves detailed reviews with residents and their families where possible, incorporating best practices and collaboration with healthcare professionals to ensure residents' health needs are met.

The care provided at Pax Hill is described as consistently kind and compassionate. Staff promote residents' dignity and privacy, offering person-centred support by actively listening and engaging residents. The atmosphere within the home is noted as calm and respectful, with staff fostering trusting relationships and interacting positively with residents at every opportunity. Residents appear relaxed and well-supported, with their individual needs and preferences being a priority.

The home is responsive to residents' needs and preferences, actively seeking feedback from relatives to drive improvements. Staff receive regular supervision and support, with clear expectations for their roles. Activities, both internal and external, are a regular and enjoyable part of residents' lives. The home's ethos supports residents' legal rights and promotes their choice and control over their lives.

However, the service is noted as requiring improvement in being well-led. While internal audits and checks are in place, they had not identified all the shortfalls found during this inspection. Specifically, staff require further training on the appropriate use of restraint, and Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) need to be clearly written and accessible for all residents. Furthermore, staff have not yet participated in full emergency evacuation drills. The registered manager has taken immediate action to address these points, including arranging fire drills and sourcing relevant training. The manager also needs to ensure that notifications to the Care Quality Commission are made for all required events.
