Inspected 7 February 2018 · report published 6 April 2018What inspectors found
Penny Pot Care Home in Clacton-on-Sea accommodates up to 38 older people in an adapted building, providing a welcoming and relaxed environment. At the time of our inspection, 37 residents were living in the home under the daily guidance of a new manager who was in the process of completing their official registration, supported day-to-day by the provider. Overall, the service demonstrates strong standards across key areas, though inspectors noted specific administrative and operational points requiring attention.
While medicines were mostly managed securely, inspectors observed one unsafe practice where two medications were pre-dispensed into plastic pots and left unattended on top of a trolley during administration. Additionally, routine environmental checks identified that some bedroom sinks were running at water temperatures reaching 50 degrees, and although maintenance had addressed this, actions were not immediately highlighted on audit forms for clear managerial oversight.
Staff demonstrated a solid understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, ensuring that decisions made on behalf of residents were strictly in their best interests. The service provided effective training and supervision, while residents were supported with proper nutrition, dietary monitoring, and prompt access to external healthcare professionals like dieticians and speech therapists.
Interactions between residents and staff were consistently kind, considerate, and compassionate, creating a calm and warm atmosphere in the home. Staff respected personal privacy by knocking on doors, promoted individual independence with adapted cutlery, and maintained strong connections with residents' families who could visit freely at any time.
Care plans were detailed, person-centered, and reflected individual communication preferences, hobbies, and personal histories. A dedicated activity coordinator and a flexible daily floater ensured residents participated in tailored group events or received meaningful one-on-one time, supported by clear procedures for managing complaints and planning future end-of-life care wishes.
Leadership within the home was praised by both staff and relatives for creating a brighter and happier environment under the new management team. The manager responded proactively to inspection feedback, immediately implementing measures to tighten medicine administration protocols and improve audit documentation for weight and fluid tracking.
